Description

For women who gave birth in the last 5 years and who received antenatal care during their most recent pregnancy, ANCTZ5_01 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported receiving care at a private specialized hospital. This response category is country-specific to Tanzania.

Some samples in the "ANC" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

ANCTZ5_01 is combined with ANCTZ6_01 (private hospital) and ANCTZ7_01 (private clinic) in ANCPRIVHOS_01 (all private hospitals and clinics) for the 2015 Tanzania sample. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using ANCTZ5_01 are encouraged to review ANCPRIVHOS_01 for a more comprehensive response category.

ANCTZ5_01 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question on where antenatal care was sought is included in Phase V forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although ANCTZ5_01 is a country-specific response, this variable is combined with other responses in ANCPRIVHOS_01, a variable that encompasses all private hospitals and clinics as sources of antenatal care.
