Description

HUSPROFP (V610) indicates whether the woman believes her husband or male partner approves of couples using a family planning method to avoid pregnancy.

When children are chosen as the unit of analysis, the woman respondent indicates the mother of the child.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and variation in the wording of the question's preface, HUSPROFP (V610) is comparable across most samples.

In some samples, the question was prefaced with the statement, "Spouses do not always agree on everything. Now I want to ask you about your husband's views on family planning," or "In your opinion, in general, do you think that your husband approves ..."

Occasionally, as with the sample for Benin 1996, an additional response category "indifferent" was added to the "approves" and "disapproves" responses. To accommodate this additional response, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding, with "Approves or indifferent" sharing a common first digit of "2," and the second digit distinguishing between "approves (code 21)" and "indifferent (code 22)." For most samples, only the "approves" and "disapproves" responses are relevant.
