Description

LANGFORMIR (V045A) reports the language on the questionnaire form used for the woman's interview.

The language on the woman's questionnaire form may have differed from the language spoken during the interview. The related variable LANGINTERVIEWIR (V045B) reports the language used to conduct the women's interview, while LANGTRANSLATEDIR (V046) indicates whether a translator was used to conduct the woman's interview.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, LANGFORMIR (V045A) has sample-specific responses in the original DHS data. To maximize comparability, LANGFORMIR uses composite coding, in which the first digit of the code indicates the broad region of the world (e.g., "1" for European languages) and the remaining digits identify the specific language (e.g., "1001" for English). Codes ending in "999" mean "other language" within the broad language group (e.g., "1999" for "Other European language"). Note that the meaning of "other" in this context is sample-specific, meaning "other than the languages recorded for this particular sample."
