Description

ATRNGO indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the woman reported a non-governmental organization (NGO) facility as a potential source of treatment for HIV/AIDS.

Some samples in the "ATR" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

For example, a given sample might include multiple categories for different types of NGOs that could be combined to create a more comprehensive response category. See Comparability for more information on the specific categories combined in this variable.

Comparability

The wording and organization of ATRNGO may vary slightly across samples. This variable is ultimately concerned with whether any NGO source was reported, not about the specific type of NGO facility reported.

In some cases, samples included multiple NGO sources in distinct response categories. For example, a sample might include "NGO health facility" and "NGO VCT center" as separate response options. As ATRNGO focuses on all NGO sources, IPUMS-DHS consolidates these response categories in this one variable to form a single, comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

ATRNGO is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.
