Description

STIADTG1 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, the female respondent reported seeking advice or treatment from a private hospital or clinic the last time she experienced symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past year. This response category is country-specific to Togo.

Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

STIADTG1 (private hospital/clinic) is combined with STIADTG2 (private doctor's office) in STIADPRIVHOS (all private hospitals/clinics/doctors) for the 1998 and 2013 Togo samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADTG1 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVHOS for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, STIADTG1 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where the woman received advice/treatment for an STI is included in Phases III, V and VI forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Although STIADTG1 is a country-specific response not included in the standard DHS modules, it is combined with other responses in STIADPRIVHOS, a standard variable that encompasses all private hospitals, clinics, and doctors as sources for STI advice/treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of STIADTG1 or the Comparability tab of STIADPRIVHOS for more information on the specific categories combined for the Togo samples.
