ANCARECGONGO_ALL variables are 1-digit variables.
0 = No
1 = Yes
7 = Don't know
8 = Missing
9 = NIU (not in universe)
Description
For women who gave birth in the last five years, ANCARECGONGO_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they received assistance for pregnancy complications at a non-governmental organization (NGO).
Some samples in the "ANCARECGO" series include categories that can be consolidated into a single response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, such as ANCARECGONGO_ALL, while preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
ANCARECGONGO_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (ANCARECGONGO_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., ANCARECGONGO_02, ANCARECGONGO_03, ANCARECGONGO_04, ANCARECGONGO_05, and ANCARECGONGO_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If ANCARECGONGO_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.
Comparability
In addition to universe differences, ANCARECGONGO_ALL varies slightly in question wording across samples, as different types of NGOs are mentioned. ANCARECGONGO_ALL is ultimately concerned with whether any NGO was reported, not about the specific type of NGO reported. Additionally, in some cases, multiple categories were consolidated to form a single, more comprehensive response. Countries of particular interest are noted below.
Because question wording varies for ANCARECGONGO_ALL, IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Survey Text tab for samples of interest.
Comparability - Standard DHS
ANCARECGONGO_ALL is a country-specific variable and is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Although responses in this variable are country-specific and not included in the standard DHS modules, they are integrated in ANCARECGONGO_ALL to increase comparability across samples.
Universe
- Bangladesh 2007: Ever-married women age 15-49 who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey.
