Description

GEO_KH2000_2021 indicates the region of Cambodia where the respondent was interviewed. The variable is integrated to yield units with consistent boundaries across samples.

Labels identify the modern geographic units (provinces) contained in each integrated region. Each sample also has its own non-integrated geography variable. All the samples have greater geographic detail available in its sample-specific variable.

An integrated GIS map (in shapefile format) for Cambodia can be downloaded here.

Comparability

In 2021, Cambodia is divided into 24 provinces and the capital of Phnom Penh. In earlier years, some of the provinces are grouped together.

  • Kampong Cham and Tboung Khmum are grouped from 2000 to 2014
  • Otdar Meanchey and Siem Reap were combined in the 2000 sample
  • Battambang and Krong Pailin were combined from 2005 to 2014
  • Kampot, Krong Kep, Krong Preah Sihanouk, and Kaoh Kong are combined due to changes in boundaries between a few of the provinces.
  • Preah Vihear, Steung Treng, and Kratie were surveyed as one unit in 2000. After 2000, they were split into two provinces, and after 2014 they were split into 3 provinces
  • Mondol Kiri and Rattanak Kiri were grouped together till 2014
