Description

GEO_ID1987_2017 indicates the region of Indonesia where the respondent was interviewed. The variable is integrated to yield units with consistent boundaries across samples.

Labels identify the modern geographic units (regions) contained in each integrated region. Each sample also has its own non-integrated geography variable. The variable GEO_ID1991_2017 reports 27 harmonized provinces.

Comparability

For comparative analysis from 1987 to 2017, provinces are combined to form the three regions of Indonesia.

The province of East Timor (a part of the Outer Java-Bali II) became independent from Indonesia in 1999 and is not included after the 1997 DHS survey.
