Codes and Frequencies
ABORTHOW reports the method used to induce the female respondent's (most recent) abortion.
ABORTHOW differs across samples in the number and specific answers in the response categories. To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for ABORTHOW.
The first digit indicates broad categories, including "Medical abortion (induced with drugs)" (code "1), "Surgical/mechanical abortion" (code "2"), and "Home remedies" (code "3"). The second digit distinguishes specific methods within these categories (e.g., code "11" for "Given oxytocin").
Comparability - Standard DHS
ABORTHOW is a country-specific variable not included in the standard DHS questionnaire.
- Nepal 2011: Women age 15-49 who had an abortion in the past 5 years.
