Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, AIDFAMSECRET (V777) is comparable across most samples.

Only those countries with comparability problems for this variable are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

AIDFAMSECRET (V777) first appears in phase IV of the Standard DHS. The question is included and consistent in all subsequent phases of the standard DHS questionnaire.

Comparability — Tanzania [top]

The survey text for Tanzania 2004 is "If a member of your family has been infected with the AIDS virus, but is not sick, would you want it to remain a secret within the family, or not a secret?" The question is more specific than most surveys' wording, stipulating that the family member "is not sick" and that the secret is "within the family."

The Tanzania 2010 sample does not share Tanzania 2004's comparability problem.

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

The survey text for Zimbabwe 2005 is "If a member of your family got infected with HIV, would you want others to know about it?" By contrast, the 2010 Zimbabwe survey, like most other samples, asked whether the respondent would want the illness "to remain a secret?"
