Description

AIDPREPKNOW (V859) indicates whether the woman has heard about PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), a medication taken daily that can prevent someone from contracting HIV, and if they have heard of it, whether they approve of its daily use.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, AIDPREPKNOW (V859) has no comparability issues.

To distinguish between approval of use among individuals who have heard about PrEP, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding, with all affirmative responses sharing a first digit of “1,” and with the second digit distinguishes between “Yes, heard of but don’t approve of use” (code 11), “Yes, heard of and approve of use” (code 12), and “Yes, heard of but don’t know about approving use” (code 13).
