AIDTESTEV (V781) indicates whether the respondent has ever been tested for HIV/AIDS.

GENERAL

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, AIDTESTEV (V781) is comparable across most samples, which generally ask a yes/no question. For some samples, noted below, responses include both a "yes" response and a "yes, during pregnancy only" response. To accommodate this variation, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding. All "yes" responses share a first digit code of "1"; the second digit distinguishes between a general "yes" response (coded "11") and "yes, during pregnancy only" (coded "12").
