Description

ANCAREBFEED_ALL indicates whether the woman was given information or counseling about breastfeeding at least once during antenatal care.

ANCAREBFEED_ALL consists of separate variables, covering the most recent birth (ANCAREBFEED_01) and, in some cases, additional births, potentially up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., ANCAREBFEED_02, ANCAREBFEED_03, ANCAREBFEED_04, ANCAREBFEED_05, and ANCAREBFEED_06). For most surveys, this information was collected for only the most recent birth; exceptions are noted in the comparability section. Beginning with DHS Phase 8, this information was collected for the most recent through the fourth most recent birth.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, ANCAREBFEED_ALL is largely comparable across samples.

Comparability - Standard DHS

ANCAREBFEED_ALL is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in the standard DHS women's questionnaire for most phases of the DHS. Beginning in DHS Phase 8, this variable was given the standard name M42H and relates to antenatal care before a birth or stillbirth in the three years before the survey.

Comparability — India [top]

The 2015 and 2019 India surveys ask whether the female respondent received advice about breastfeeding in a meeting with a community health worker during the last 3 months of her pregnancy.

The 2019 India survey collected this information about the most recent birth up to the fourth-most-recent birth. The 2015 India survey collected this information on only the most recent birth.
