Description
ANCAREHBEAT_ALL (M42F_ALL) indicates whether the fetal heartbeat was listened to during antenatal care for the woman.
ANCAREHBEAT_ALL consists of a set of up to four separate variables, covering the most recent birth or stillbirth (ANCAREHBEAT_01) up to the fourth-most recent birth or stillbirth (i.e., ANCAREHBEAT_02, ANCAREHBEAT_03, ANCAREHBEAT_04) during the reference period prior to the survey. If ANCAREHBEAT_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcherâs data file. For samples prior to DHS Phase 8, only ANCAREHBEAT_01 may be available as a country-specific variable.
Comparability
Along with universe differences, ANCAREHBEAT_ALL (M42F_ALL) differs across samples in the source variable name, the reference period, and whether the antenatal care covered recent stillbirths as well as births. Beginning in Phase 8, this variable is given a standard name and refers to antenatal care for births and stillbirths in the three years before the survey. Earlier, country-specific versions of this variable related to antenatal care for births in the five years prior to the survey.
