Description
For women who gave birth in the previous three to five years, ANCAREWHY_ALL reports the main reason why the woman first sought antenatal care.
ANCAREWHY_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (ANCAREWHY_01) up to, potentially, the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., ANCAREWHY_02, ANCAREWHY_03, ANCAREWHY_04, ANCAREWHY_05, and ANCAREWHY_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If ANCAREWHY_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.
For most surveys, this information on why the woman first sought antenatal care was collected for only the most recent birth (ANCAREWHY_01). Surveys in which the data were collected for additional births are noted in the comparability section.
Comparability
In addition to universe differences, the question wording and number of response categories in ANCAREWHY_ALL varies across samples. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding, with summary response categories noted in the first digit and detail not always available retained in the second digit. For example, responses falling under the general heading of "regular checkup" share a first digit of "1," while additional detail is supplied in the second digit (e.g., code 11 for "check on status of baby").
Most surveys collected the information in ANCAREWHY_ALL for only the most recent birth (ANCAREWHY_01). Exceptions and differences in question wording are noted below.
Comparability - Standard DHS
ANCAREWHY_01 is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.

- Bangladesh 2004: Ever-married women age 10-49 who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey and received antenatal care.
- Central African Republic 1995: Women age 15-49 who gave birth in the 3 years before the survey and received prenatal care.
- Egypt 1988: Ever-married women age 15-49 who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey and received antenatal care.
- Jordan 1990: Ever-married women age 15-49 who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey and who saw a doctor, nurse, or midwife for antenatal care.
- Morocco 2003: Women age 15-49 who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey and received antenatal care.
- Pakistan 2006: Ever-married women age 15-49 who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey and received antenatal care.
- Yemen 1991: Ever-married women age 15-49 who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey and received antenatal care.
