Description

For women who gave birth in the five years before the survey, ANMALCHLOR_ALL (M49B_x) indicates whether the female respondent took the antimalarial drug chloroquine while pregnant.

For surveys that collected this data on multiple births during the reference period, ANMALCHLOR_ALL consists of a set of five separate variables, covering the most recent birth (ANMALCHLOR_01) up to the fifth-most-recent birth (i.e., ANMALCHLOR_02, ANMALCHLOR_03, ANMALCHLOR_04, and ANMALCHLOR_05) during the reference period prior to the survey. If ANMALCHLOR_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

For a few surveys including this question, information for this variable was collected on all births, up to a maximum of five, in the reference period. In many cases, data were hypothetically collected on up to five births, but no women in the survey had so many births (e.g., no woman had 4 or more births in 3 years, or had 5 in 5 years). If, for example, no woman in a survey had 5 births in five years and only blank values were included in the original DHS file, then ANMALCHLOR_05 would not be available for that survey in IPUMS-DHS.

For most surveys, this information was collected for only the most recent birth (ANMALCHLOR_01). For surveys with data on only the most recent birth, including ANMALCHLOR_ALL in a data extract will add only the variable ANMALCHLOR_01 to the researcher's customized data file.

Surveys in which the data were collected for more than the most recent birth are noted in the comparability section.

Comparability

Apart from slight differences in question wording, ANMALCHLOR_ALL (M49B_x) has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

ANMALCHLOR_ALL (M49B_X) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases IV through VI.

Beginning in Phase IV, the standard questionnaire asks, "During this pregnancy, did you take any drugs in order to prevent you from getting malaria? Which drugs did you take to prevent malaria?" "Chloroquine" is a standard response category in Phases IV through VI.

Comparability — Benin [top]

The 2001 and 2006 Benin surveys include "Chloroquine/Nivaquine" as a response category. The 2011 Benin survey includes the more standard "Chloroquine."

Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]

The 2003 Burkina Faso survey includes "Chloroquine/Nivaquine" as a response category. The 2010 Burkina Faso survey includes the more standard "Chloroquine."

Comparability — Cameroon [top]

The 2004 and 2011 Cameroon survey includes "Chloroquine/Nivaquine" as a response category.

Comparability — Guinea [top]

The 2018 Guinea survey collected information for this variable for all births in the reference period.

Comparability — Nigeria [top]

The 2003 Nigeria survey includes separate response categories for "Chloroquine" and "Nivaquine." As "Nivaquine" is a trade name for chloroquine, IPUMS-DHS has combined the responses for both categories into a single variable. The 2008 and 2013 Nigeria surveys include only the standard "Chloroquine" as a response category.
