ANMALOTH_ALL variables are 1-digit variables.

8 = Missing
9 = NIU (not in universe)

Description

For women who gave birth in the 5 years before the survey, ANMALOTH_ALL (M49X_X) indicates whether she took some other antimalarial drug while pregnant. The meaning of "other" must be interpreted relative to the specific categories included in a particular sample.

For samples that collected this information for multiple births during the reference period, ANMALOTH_ALL consists of a set of five separate variables, covering the most recent birth (ANMALOTH_01) up to the fifth-most-recent birth (i.e., ANMALOTH_02, ANMALOTH _03, ANMALOTH _04, and ANMALOTH_05) during the reference period prior to the survey. If ANMALOTH_ALL is included in a data extract for these samples, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

For a few surveys including this question, information for this variable was collected on all births, up to a maximum of five, in the reference period. In many cases, data were hypothetically collected on up to five births, but no women in the survey had so many births (e.g., no woman had 4 or more births in 3 years, or had 5 in 5 years). If, for example, no woman in a survey had 5 births in five years and only blank values were included in the original DHS file, then ANMALOTH_05 would not be available for that survey in IPUMS-DHS.

For most surveys, this information was collected for only the most recent birth (ANMALOTH_01). For such surveys, adding ANMALOTH_ALL to a data extract will add only ANMALOTH_01 to the researcher's customized data file.

Surveys in which the data were collected for multiple births are noted in the comparability section.

Comparability

ANMALOTH_ALL (M49X_X) has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

ANMALOTH_ALL (M49X_X) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in Phases IV through VI.

Beginning in Phase IV, the standard questionnaire asks, "During this pregnancy, did you take any drugs in order to prevent you from getting malaria? Which drugs did you take to prevent malaria?"

Comparability — Guinea [top]

The 2018 Guinea survey collected information for this variable for all births in the reference period.
