Comparability

Along with universe differences and slight differences in question wording, BHCPERMIT (V467B) differs across samples in the number of response categories. Some samples include only two response categories: 1) Not a big problem versus 2) A big problem. Other samples include three responses, distinguishing between "no problem," "small problem," and "big problem."

To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding, with "Not a big problem" responses having a first digit of "1" and "Big Problem" having a first digit of "2." The second digit distinguishes between "No problem" (code "11") and "Small problem" (code "12"), when this additional information is available.

By contrast, the 2000 Ethiopian survey asked about a concrete instance--"the last time you were sick"--and, for those women who did not seek treatment, asked an open-ended question about their reason(s) for not seeking treatment.
