Description
For women who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, BPMED indicates whether she is currently taking prescribed medicine to lower her blood pressure.
Comparability — Index
Comparability
Along with universe differences, BPMED varies across samples in the allowed response categories, sometimes including "not applicable" as well as "yes" and "no." To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses a common first digit of "1" for both non-affirmative ("no" and "not applicable") responses, and distinguishes between "no" and "not applicable" in the second digit of the harmonized codes.
Comparability - Standard DHS
BPMED is a country-specific variable for most phases of the DHS. In DHS Phase 8, the standard variable CHD05 is included in the optional module on chronic disease.
Comparability — Zambia [top]
The 2018 Zambia survey asks if the woman is taking or has taken any drugs (medication) for raised blood pressure in the last two weeks.
