CALCONTR_STOP (CALCONTR_STOP)
Final month of period of continuous use of a contraceptive method

Codes

This variable is not available for any of the currently selected samples.

Description

CALCONTR_STOP indicates whether the woman-month marked the last month of a period of continuous use of a contraceptive method and thus, logically, whether a spell of using that method stopped that month. Note that stopping use of a contraceptive method is recorded for the last month of a continuous spell of use, not for the first, following month of non-use of the method.

The dichotomous (yes/no) variable CALCONTR_STOP was calculated in two different ways from string data for samples that collected calendar data on contraceptive use.

First, if the sample reported the reason why the woman stopped using that contraceptive method (during the last month marking the end of a continuous period of use of the method) in CALREASON, then CALCONTR_STOP is coded "Yes" (1). In other words, any response in CALREASON other than "not in universe" (99) is coded "1" in CALCONTR_STOP. See the description of CALREASON for more information about this variable.

For the small number of samples that reported on contraceptive use by month but did not collect information on the reason for stopping contraceptive use, CALCONTR_STOP is calculated directly from the data on monthly contraceptive use. For a woman-month to receive an affirmative response in CALCONTR_STOP:

1) Contraceptive use was recorded for that month (i.e., a value greater than 0 [non-use of contraception] and less than 90 [a specific method of contraception] was reported in CALREPROD_ALLEVENTS).
2) The following month recorded a different, non-missing (not "999") value in CALREPROD_ALLEVENTS.
3) Data were not missing for the current month or the following month in CALREPROD_ALLEVENTS.
4) The month was not the final, interview month for the woman (since events after that last month are unknown).

Discontinuation of a contraceptive method (i.e., an affirmative response in CALCONTR_STOP) was noted if a woman switched to a different contraceptive method the following month, did not use contraception during the following month, or had a birth, pregnancy, or pregnancy termination the following month.

The related variable CALCONTR_STOP_TOTAL reports how many times over the reproductive calendar period the woman stopped using a contraceptive method.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, CALCONTR_STOP differs across samples in how the variable was calculated by the IPUMS DHS team. As noted in the variable description for CALCONTR_STOP, for samples with data on the reason for discontinuing use of a contraceptive method, values in CALREASON were the basis for codes in CALCONTR_STOP. For samples that collected monthly data on contraceptive use but not on reason for discontinuation, CALCONTR_STOP was calculated directly from monthly data on contraceptive use for adjoining months.

Comparability - Standard DHS

CALCONTR_STOP is based on string calendar data for women's samples that collected calendar data on contraceptive use and, for most samples, on data about the reason for stopping use of a method.
