CALCONTR_TOTAL (CALCONTR_TOTAL)
Number of months women used contraception during calendar period

Codes

This variable is not available for any of the currently selected samples.

Description

CALCONTR_TOTAL reports how many months women used contraception during the entire length of the reproductive calendar.

The related variable CALCONTR indicates whether contraception was used during a specific woman-month.

To learn the type of contraception used (if any) during the month, see CALREPROD_ALLEVENTS.

In CALCONTR_TOTAL, a value of "0" indicates the woman associated with that month did not use contraception during any month for the entire length of the reproductive calendar. A value of 1 or more but less than 99 indicates contraceptive use for one month only during the reproductive calendar period, two months of contraceptive use during the period, and so on.

If a woman used contraception for one month only (for example, in the last month of her calendar record), the monthly values recorded for her in CALCONTR are "1," "0," "0", and repeated values of "0" back to the start of the calendar period. However, her single instance of contraceptive use with a code of "1" in one month in CALCONTR gets copied over for each woman-month for that woman, as in "1," "1," and "1" throughout the reproductive calendar period, in CALCONTR_TOTAL.

In CALCONTR_TOTAL, a value of "99" refers to "not in universe" cases for women who had only missing data for every month of the calendar period, for samples that collected data on births, pregnancies, terminations, and contraceptive use. For women with at least one month of meaningful response during the calendar period, the woman's number of months of contraceptive use is copied over to every calendar month, including those months that had a missing response in CALCONTR.

For the explanation of the high number of "not in universe" cases in CALCONTR_TOTAL for some samples, see the country-specific comparability text.

Comparability — Index

GENERAL

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, CALCONTR_TOTAL is largely comparable across samples with calendar data on contraceptive use.

Comparability - Standard DHS

CALCONTR_TOTAL is based on the string variable V_CAL1 for women's samples that collected calendar data on contraceptive use.
