CALPREG (CALPREG)
Pregnancy during woman-month

Codes

This variable is not available for any of the currently selected samples.

Description

CALPREG is a dichotomous variable (0 for no, 1 for yes) indicating whether the woman was pregnant during that calendar month.

Note that a woman was also pregnant during the month that she gave birth, so eight months of pregnancy followed by a live birth represents a 9-month pregnancy. CALPREG has an affirmative response only for the months of pregnancy preceding the month of birth or pregnancy termination, not for the month of birth or pregnancy termination.

The related variable CALPREG_TOTAL, which reports the total number of months women spent pregnant during the calendar period, counts months of pregnancy only, not months when a birth or pregnancy termination occurred.

In IPUMS DHS, a month when a birth or pregnancy termination occurred does count as a month of pregnancy in the following summary variables:

Number of months a given (non-truncated) pregnancy lasted (CALPREG_LENGTH)
Whether a non-truncated pregnancy lasted more than 9 months (CALPREG_LONG)
Whether a pregnancy was (potentially) left-censored because it occurred during the earliest month of the calendar period (CALPREG_LC

Comparability — Index

GENERAL

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, CALPREG is largely comparable across samples.

Some samples with a large number of cases coded "not in universe or missing response" include subgroups of women who were not administered the questions to collect calendar data. For details, see the country-specific comparability text for information about why large numbers of cases were coded "9" (not in universe or missing response) in CALPREG for some samples.

Some other samples that collected data on births, pregnancies, terminations, and contraceptive use included months with missing data (filled with blanks), but all or nearly all women included in the sample had at least one calendar month reporting a meaningful response for a reproductive event. IPUMS DHS has coded the months with missing data in these samples as "Not in universe or missing response" (code 9) in CALPREG.

Researchers may choose to recode those "not in universe or missing response" cases in CALPREG as "0" for "Not pregnant during the month" for their analyses. If so, researchers should not recode as "0" those cases coded as "99" (not in universe) in CALPREG_TOTAL. Only cases relating to women with no valid calendar data for any month are coded "99" in CALPREG_TOTAL.

Comparability - Standard DHS

CALPREG is a standard variable taken from VCAL_1 for women's samples that collected calendar data.
