Description

CHLWORKOUTHH (CHL1) indicates whether, in the past week, the child household member did any work, paid or unpaid, for someone who is not a member of the household.

Comparability

Along with universe differences and slight differences in question wording, CHLWORKOUTHH (CHL1) differs across samples in the degree of detail in responses. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding. All affirmative responses share a first digit of "1"; the second digit provides detail not always available (e.g., code "11" for "yes, paid work").

Comparability - Standard DHS

CHLWORKOUTHH (CHL1) is included in the child labor module of Phase VI of the standard DHS questionnaire.
