Description

For women who gave birth in the three to five years before the survey, DELCESRLAST (V401) indicates whether the last-born child was delivered by caesarean (cesarean) section.

When children or births are the unit of analysis, this variable describes a characteristic of the mother, which causes allchildren of the mother to be coded the same way.

Question wording varies slightly across samples. See Comparability.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, DELCESRLAST (V401) is largely comparable across samples.

The question about caesarean (cesarean) delivery was generally asked only of women who gave birth in a medical facility. During data processing, a "no" response was imputed for women giving birth outside medical facilities.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DELCESRLAST is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase II forward.

In Phases II through V, the standard questionnaire asks, "Was (NAME) delivered by caesarean section?"

In Phase VI forward, the standard questionnaire asks, "Was (NAME) delivered by caesarean, that is, did they cut your belly open to take the baby out?"
