Description
For children born in the three to five years preceding the survey, DELGH2 indicates whether a midwife assisted with the child's delivery. This response category is country-specific to Ghana.
Some samples in the "DEL" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
DELGH2 is combined with DELGH1 (nurse) for the 1993 and 1998 Ghana samples to create the standard variable DELNURM. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using DELGH2 are encouraged to review DELNURM for this more comprehensive response category.
Comparability
Apart from universe differences, DELGH2 has no comparability problems.
Comparability - Standard DHS
An open-ended question about who provided delivery care is included in Phase II forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.
Though DELGH2 is a country-specific response, it is combined with other responses in DELNURM, a standard variable that encompasses nurses/midwives as sources of delivery care. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of DELGH2 or the Comparability tab of DELNURM for more information on the specific categories combined for Ghana 1993 and 1998.
