Description

For women who gave birth in the last five years, DELMW2_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported a doctor/clinical officer gave delivery care for a recent birth. This response category is country-specific to Malawi.

DELMW2_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (DELMW2_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., DELMW2_02, DELMW2_03, DELMW2_04, DELMW2_05, and DELMW2_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If DELMW2_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.

Comparability

DELMW2_ALL has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about who provided delivery care is included in Phase II forward of the standard DHS questionnaire. DELMW2_ALL is a country-specific response.

Comparability — Malawi [top]

The 2000, 2004, and 2010 Malawi samples include "doctor/clinical officer" as a response category. The 2016 Malawi sample includes "doctor/clinical officer/medical assistant" as a response category. This overlaps with DELMW1_ALL, which indicates whether a clinical officer or medical assistant gave delivery care (for the last birth).

To maximize comparability, users may wish to consolidate responses to DELDOC_ALL (M3A_x), DELMW1_ALL, and DELMW2_ALL.
