Description

DRAWNCART indicates whether a household member owned an animal-drawn cart. Question wording varied across samples; see Comparability.

The information in DRAWNCART is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors. Researchers may wish to exclude visitors using the RESIDENT variable (with visitors coded "2") when women, children, or births are the unit of analysis, and using the HHRESIDENT variable when household members are the unit of analysis.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, DRAWNCART has differences in question wording across samples. Most commonly, the survey asked "Does any member of this household own an animal-drawn cart?" Surveys with different question wording are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DRAWNCART is included in the standard DHS household questionnaire from Phase 5 forward.

Comparability — Ghana [top]

The Ghana surveys for 1993, 1998, and 2003 ask about ownership of "a horse/cart." The 2008 Ghana survey uses the standard wording of "an animal-drawn cart."

Comparability — India [top]

The 1998 Indian survey asks whether the household owns "a bullock cart."

Comparability — Lesotho [top]

The 2004, 2009, and 2014 Lesotho surveys ask whether the household owns a "Scotch cart." This vehicle is a small two-wheeled cart with a back panel that can be detached.

The Madagascar surveys for 1992 and 1997 ask about ownership of "a cart."

The Malawi surveys for 1992 and 2010 ask about ownership of "an oxcart."

The Mali surveys for 2001 and 2006 ask about ownership of "a cart" or "carts."

Comparability — Namibia [top]

The 1992 and 2000 Namibia surveys asked whether any member of the household owns "a donkey cart or horse." The 2006 and 2013 Namibia surveys used the more standard wording of "animal drawn cart."

The 2016 South African survey asks about ownership of an animal-drawn cart "in working condition."

The 1994 Zimbabwe survey asks about ownership of "a modern oxcart." The 1999 Zimbabwe survey asks about ownership of "a modern oxcart/scotchcart." The 2005 and 2010 Zimbabwe surveys use the standard wording of "an animal-drawn cart."
