Comparability – Standard DHS

DVADISOBEY is a country-specific variable not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire, but it is part of a series of questions about when the woman believes wife beating is justified, included in Phase IV forward of the standard DHS questionnaire.

The Phase IV and V questionnaires word the introductory question as follows: "Sometimes a husband is annoyed or angered by things that his wife does. In your opinion, is a husband justified in hitting or beating his wife in the following situations?"

The Phase VI and VII questionnaires remove the prefacing sentence, and simply ask, "In your opinion, is a husband justified in hitting or beating his wife in the following situations?"
