Description

For women who were randomly selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and had a husband/partner who drank alcohol, DVDRINKSFQ (D114) reports how often their husband/partner got drunk.

Comparability

There are significant differences in question wording for some samples that may limit the comparability of DVDRINKSFQ (D114). While most samples ask only about the frequency of a husband's/partner's getting drunk, some samples ask about the frequency of using other substances in addition to alcohol.

Only those countries with comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVDRINKSFQ (D114) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phases IV, V, VI, and VII of the standard domestic violence module.

Comparability — Kenya [top]

The Kenya 2003 sample asks how often the husband/partner gets drunk or takes illegal drugs.

Comparability — Pakistan [top]

The 2012 and 2017 Pakistan surveys ask how often the woman's husband gets drunk or high on drugs.

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 2016 South Africa survey asks about the respondent's current or most recent spouse, live-in partner, or boyfriend.
