Comparability

There are differences in question wording that may limit the comparability of DVHBOSS (D119W) across samples.

All samples that include DVHBOSS code whether the woman sought help from her employer to stop the mentioned abuse. Several samples also code whether the woman sought help from others at work.

In addition, differences resulting from the question wording for the variable DVHANY (D119Y) are significant. In effect, while most samples ask if the woman has "ever" sought help from their employer to stop such abuse, some samples ask if the woman sought help from their employer to stop such abuse within "the past year."

Only those countries with comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVHBOSS (D119W) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is based on a question included in phase IV of the standard domestic violence module (for use with Phases IV, VI, and VII of the standard DHS questionnaire, respectively).

The wording for this response category differs between versions of the module. The first version asks whether the woman sought help from her employer to stop the reported abuse. The third and fourth versions ask whether the woman sought help from her employer or others at work to stop abuse.

Comparability — Egypt [top]

The Egypt 2005 sample asks whether the respondent sought help from her employer to stop abuse from her husband or partner within the past year.

Comparability — Jordan [top]

The 2007 Jordan sample asks from whom the respondent sought help to stop abuse from her husband within the past year.

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 2016 South Africa sample includes "colleague" as a response category, rather than the more standard "employer/someone at work."
