Comparability

There are differences in question wording of the preceding variable DVHITHUSB (D112) that limit the comparability of its follow-up question, DVHITHUSBFQ (D112A), across samples.

Only those countries with comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVHITHUSBFQ (D112A) is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire, but it is included in Phase V forward of the standard domestic violence module.

Comparability — Angola [top]

The 2015 Angola survey asks whether the respondent has physically hurt her husband/partner when he was not already physically hurting her often, sometimes, a few times, or not at all in the last 12 months. To maximize comparability, the responses to "a few times" and "sometimes" are consolidated into "Sometimes" (code "1") in DVHITHUSBFQ.

Comparability — Egypt [top]

For most samples, the survey question associated with DVHITHUSB, which precedes the question for DVHITHUSBFQ, asks the woman to indicate whether she had ever physically hurt their husband/partner when he was not already physically hurting her. By contrast, the DVHITHUSB survey question for Egypt 2005 asks the woman if she had ever physically hurt her husband, without reference to whether he had been hurting her.

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 2016 South Africa survey asks about the respondent's current or most recent spouse, live-in partner, or boyfriend.

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

For most samples, the survey question associated with DVHITHUSB, which precedes the question for DVHITHUSBFQ, asks the woman to indicate whether she had ever physically hurt their husband/partner when he was not already physically hurting her. By contrast, the DVHITHUSB survey question for Zimbabwe 2005 asks the woman if she had ever physically hurt her husband when he was not already emotionally or physically hurting her.
