Comparability

Differences resulting from the question wording and the presence of the variable DVOWHOMOST (D116) limit the comparability of DVONO (D117) across samples. Some samples record the number of times the person who--other than her husband/partner--most often slapped, hit, kicked, or otherwise physically hurt the woman since age 15 (coded in the variable DVOWHOMOST) physically hurt her in the last 12 months. Other samples record the number of times in the last 12 months anyone other than the woman's husband/partner had hit, slapped, kicked, or done anything else to physically hurt her.

The samples that record the number of times in the last 12 months the person who--other than her husband/partner--most often slapped, hit, kicked, or otherwise physically hurt her since age 15 had done these things to her are:

Malawi 2004
Mali 2006

The samples that record the number of times in the last 12 months anyone other than the woman's husband/partner had hit, slapped, kicked, or done anything else to physically hurt her are:

Kenya 2003

In addition, there are some notable differences in response categories. Only those that result in comparability issues are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVONO (D117) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is based on a question included in phase IV of the standard domestic violence module.

Comparability — Mali [top]

Mali 2006 includes a response category for "IF WIDOW, DIV. OR SEPARATED" as an alternative to recording the number of times the person who has most often physically hurt the woman attacked her in the past 12 months. In effect, this results in a universe difference that means DVONO is not recorded for those who are widowed, divorced, or separated.

Comparability — South Africa [top]

The 1998 South Africa survey does not exclude violence from a husband/partner.
