Description

For women who were randomly selected and interviewed for the domestic violence module and were ever married or lived with a man, DVPSEXCOERC indicates whether the woman's husband/partner ever forced her with threats or in any other (non-physical) way to perform any sexual acts she did not want to do.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, DVPSEXCOERC is largely comparable across most samples.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVPSEXCOERC is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is included in phases IV, V, VI, and VII of the standard domestic violence module.

The third and fourth versions of the standard domestic violence module specifically ask about verbally or otherwise coerced intercourse or other sex acts (through threats, but not physical force, for example). The first and second versions of the standard domestic violence module asks whether the respondent's husband has ever forced her to perform any sexual acts she did not want to do, but does not distinguish between physical or verbal force.

For information about physically forcing any sex act (intercourse or other), as well as generally forcing any sex act, see DVPSEXOTH from the first or second version of the standard domestic violence module. Depending on researcher preference and interpretation of "force" more generally, DVPSEXOTH and DVPSEXCOERC could be combined to align with surveys using the first standard domestic violence module.

The 2016 South Africa survey asks about the respondent's current or most recent spouse, live-in partner, or boyfriend.
