Comparability

Differences resulting from question wording may limit the comparability of DVSEXFORCYR (D124) across samples. In effect, while most samples explicitly exclude the respondent's husband or live-in partner, some samples do not explicitly exclude them.

Only those countries with comparability issues for this variable are discussed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

DVSEXFORCYR (D124) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire for any phase, but it is based on a question included in phases V, VI, and VII of the standard domestic violence module.

Comparability — Congo (Democratic Republic) [top]

The 2007 Democratic Republic of the Congo survey does not explicitly exclude the respondent's husband/partner, which may limit this sample's comparability.

Comparability — Congo Brazzaville [top]

The 2005 Republic of the Congo - Brazzaville survey does not explicitly exclude the respondent's husband/partner, which may limit this sample's comparability.

Comparability — Liberia [top]

The 2007 Liberia survey uses a country-specific euphemism, men business, to politely refer to sexual intercourse.

Comparability — Malawi [top]

Malawi 2004 does not make a distinction in question wording depending on if the respondent has been married. In effect, this means that, unlike other samples which explicitly exclude the respondent's husband/partner if they were ever married or lived with a man, in Malawi 2004 a respondent's husband is not explicitly excluded.

Comparability — Senegal [top]

The 2005 Senegal survey does not explicitly exclude the respondent's husband/partner, which may limit this sample's comparability.
