Description
ETHNICITYKZ (V131KZ) is a variable specific to Kazakhstan that records the reported nationality of the woman respondent.
Comparability
ETHNICITYKZ (V131KZ) uses identical question wording to ask about nationality in the 1995 and 1999 surveys. The 1995 survey data include more response categories, however, because they identify additional responses beyond a specified list; the 1999 survey groups all additional responses as "other" only.
IPUMS DHS maximizes comparability across surveys for this variable by using composite coding. All categories mentioned in the survey are given a first digit of 1; the open-ended "other" responses have a first digit of 2 and can be grouped together to achieve comparability across survey years.
Comparability - Standard DHS
ETHNICITY (V131) is a country-specific variable included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 2 forward, with no standard wording or response categories.
