ETHNICITYML (V131ML) is a country-specific variable for Mali that collects information about the ethnic group to which the woman belongs. While five ethnic groups (with codes 01 through 05) are reported for all Malian samples, the number and names of other ethnic groups vary across samples. IPUMS-DHS therefore uses a composite coding system for groups beyond the first five. Other Malian ethnicities share a common first digit of 1; foreigners share a common first digit of 2; and specific detail is provided in the second digit of the codes.
