Comparability

ETHNICITYMW (V131MW) is a country-specific variable for Malawi that collects information about the ethnic group to which the woman belongs. While eight ethnic groups (with codes 01 through 08) are reported for all Malawian samples, the number and names of other ethnic groups vary across samples. IPUMS-DHS therefore uses a composite coding system for groups beyond the first eight. These other groups share a common first digit of 1, and specific detail is provided in the second digit of their codes.
