Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, FCAGE (G106) is largely comparable across samples.

Some samples include instructions to probe for an estimated age. Other samples do not include such instructions, and this difference may affect the accuracy and comparability of responses across samples.

In addition to an open-ended response for recording age, some samples include the response category "During infancy." To maximize comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS codes that response numerically as "0."

Samples with additional comparability issues are discussed in greater detail below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

While FCAGE (G106) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire, the question is included in all three versions of the standard DHS module on female circumcision. Though there are slight changes in question wording, the variable is generally consistent and comparable across the standard DHS modules.

Comparability — Chad [top]

The 2004 Chad survey includes specific numeric responses, as well as grouped numeric responses (codes "91" through "93"). To maximize comparability, researchers may want to recode specific numeric responses (codes "0" through "44") to match these grouped numeric responses when using the 2004 Chad survey.

Comparability — Nigeria [top]

The Nigeria 2013 and 2018 survey forms ask for the age of the woman at the first time her circumcision was performed. Earlier Nigerian samples do not specify the first performance of the woman's circumcision.

A DHS final report for Nigeria includes the following text on comparability problems: "The 2008 NDHS showed a higher prevalence of female circumcision than that reported in the 2003 NDHS (30 percent versus 19 percent). However, this increase was actually due to variations in the definition of FGC used in the two surveys. In the 2008 NDHS, some of the field teams included angurya and gishiri cuts in the FGC category while others did not. This was not the case in 2003 NDHS. In the 2013 NDHS, the definition of FGC explicitly followed the WHO definition ... and captured the practice of angurya and gishiri cuts. Any comparisons of FGC data from the 2013 survey with data from these earlier surveys should be made with caution."
