Description
For women who were circumcised, FCINFIB (G105) indicates whether their genital area was sewn closed during the procedure. Question wording varies across samples. See Comparability.

Along with universe differences, there are differences in question wording for FCINFIB (G105). The most common wording was "Was your genital area sewn closed?"
A minority of samples provided less specific wording, asking instead, "Did they somehow close your vaginal area?" or "Was your genital area closed in any way?"
Other samples asked about total or partial closure of the vagina: "During your circumcision, did they partially or completely close the vaginal opening by sewing a seam?"

Comparability - Standard DHS
FCINFIB (G105) is not included in the standard DHS questionnaire, but it does appear in all three versions of the standard DHS module on female circumcision. The accompanying text for this variable in version three notes, "This question should be adapted to reflect country-specific methods of infibulation (that is, ways in which the vaginal area is narrowed or 'closed.')"
Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]
The Burkina Faso 1998 form asks whether the vaginal area was partially or completely sewn closed, while the Burkina Faso 2003 survey asks if the vaginal area was completely sewn closed. The Burkina Faso 2010 form uses the most common wording, noted above.
Comparability — Guinea [top]
The Guinea 1999 survey form asks whether "they totally [closed] or almost [closed] the opening of the cut part," and does not specifically inquire about sewing of the vaginal area. The Guinea 2005 form also provides less specific wording, asking whether "the genital area [was] closed in any way." The Guinea 2012 survey uses the most common phrasing, noted above.
Comparability — Nigeria [top]
A DHS final report for Nigeria includes the following text on comparability problems: "The 2008 NDHS showed a higher prevalence of female circumcision than that reported in the 2003 NDHS (30 percent versus 19 percent). However, this increase was actually due to variations in the definition of FGC used in the two surveys. In the 2008 NDHS, some of the field teams included angurya and gishiri cuts in the FGC category while others did not. This was not the case in 2003 NDHS. In the 2013 NDHS, the definition of FGC explicitly followed the WHO definition ... and captured the practice of angurya and gishiri cuts. Any comparisons of FGC data from the 2013 survey with data from these earlier surveys should be made with caution."
