The related variable MAFEDGRAIN24H (V414E) indicates whether the child's mother gave her youngest surviving child any food made from grain during the previous day.
The related variable FEDGRAIN24HX reports the number of times the child ate any food made from grain in the previous 24 hours. FEDGRAINWKD (M40Q) reports the number of days the child ate any food made from grain during the past week.
Comparability
Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, such as different grains included in the questionnaires, FEDGRAIN24H (M37Q) is largely comparable across samples.
Comparability - Standard DHS
FEDGRAIN24H (M37Q) is included in Phases III and IV of the standard DHS questionnaire. The standard questionnaire for Phase III asks, "At any time yesterday or last night, was (NAME) given any of the following: Any food made from wheat, maize, rice, sorghum, or local grain, such as porridge, bread, or noodles?" In Phase IV, the standard questionnaire asks, "In total, how many times yesterday during the day or at night did (NAME) eat any food made from grains [e.g., millet, sorghum, maize, rice, wheat, or other local grains]?"
Because the wording in the standard questionnaire changed between Phases III and IV, the meaning of "Don't know" (code "7") may be different depending on the phase. In Phase III samples, a code of "Don't know" indicates that the respondent is unsure whether the child ate that particular food during the previous day. In Phase IV samples, a code of "Don't know" can also indicate that the respondent is unsure of how many times the child ate that particular food.
