FEVGIVANTIB (ML13I)
Child's fever/cough treated by: Antibiotics (pill/syrup)

Codes

This variable is not available for any of the currently selected samples.

Description

For young children with a fever or cough in the past 2 to 4 weeks, FEVGIVANTIB (ML13I) indicates whether the child was given an antibiotic pill or syrup.

A few samples ask separately about drugs taken for fever and drugs taken for cough. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable while preserving the separate responses in composite coding. A first digit of 1 indicates the child received the drug, and the second digit indicates the child's illness:

  • 11: The child was given the drug for a fever
  • 12: The child was given the drug for a cough
  • 13: The child was given the drug for a fever or a cough
  • 14: The child was given the drug for both a fever and a cough
  • 15: The child was given the drug for a fever or convulsions
  • 16: The child was given the drug for a fever or difficult/rapid breathing

GENERAL

Comparability

In addition to slight differences in question wording, FEVGIVANTIB (ML13I) contains universe differences based on what illness the child had. Most commonly, this question is asked about children who had either a fever or a cough in the past 2 weeks. However, some countries diverge from this standard convention by asking about children with only a fever, only a cough, or a fever or convulsions. In addition, Phase I samples ask about illnesses in the past 4 weeks, while all other phases ask about the past 2 weeks. Countries of particular interest are noted below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about what drug the child was given for a fever and/or cough is included in the standard DHS questionnaire in a) Phases I and II, b) in Phase V forward, and c) in the malaria module of the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase IV. The standard questionnaire for Phase I refers separately to drugs taken for a fever and drugs taken for a cough. The standard questionnaires for Phases II, V, and VI refer to drugs taken for a fever and/or cough. Phase IV refers only to drugs taken for a fever. Phase VII refers to drugs taken for a fever or difficult or rapid breathing. FEVGIVANTIB (ML13I) is included as a standard response category in Phases I and II, and in Phase V forward.
