FEVTRPK5 (FEVTRPK5)
Source of fever/cough treatment: Dai (other) (Pakistan)

Codes

This variable is not available for any of the currently selected samples.

Description

For children with a fever or cough in the past 2 weeks, FEVTRPK5 indicates, in response to an open-ended question, whether the child received treatment from a "dai/traditional birth attendant." This response category is country-specific to Pakistan.

Some samples in the "FEVTR" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

FEVTRPK5 is combined with other traditional practitioners and healers in the 2006, 2012, and 2017 Pakistan surveys:

  • In the 2006 and 2012 Pakistan samples, FEVTRPK5 is combined with FEVTRPK3 (homeopath) and FEVTRPK4 (hakim) in FEVTRPRIVHL (all traditional practitioners/healers).
  • In the 2017 Pakistan sample, FEVTRPK5 is combined with FEVTRPK3 (homeopath), FEVTRPK4 (hakim), and FEVTRPPK11 (community midwife) in FEVTRPRIVHL (all traditional practitioners/healers).

IPUMS-DHS users interested in using FEVTRPK5 are encouraged to review FEVTRPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category for these two samples.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences and slight differences in question wording, FEVTRPK5 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where treatment was sought for the child's fever/cough is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase II forward.

Although FEVTRPK5 is a country-specific response, it is combined with other responses in FEVTRPRIVHL, a standard variable that encompasses all traditional healers/practitioners as sources of fever/cough treatment. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of FEVTRPK5 or the Comparability tab of FEVTRPRIVHL for more information on the specific categories combined for Pakistan 2006, 2012, and 2017.
