Description

FPKNODIA (V304_04) indicates whether the woman knew about the diaphragm or spermicides, such as a foam or jelly, as a method for family planning. Some phases combine diaphragm and spermicides in the response and some are separate; see Comparability. Some samples differentiate between spontaneous and probed affirmative responses; see Comparability.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, FPKNODIA (V304_04) differs in the degree of detail in affirmative response codes, and in whether spermicides were included in the description of the diaphragm method.

In most samples, the woman is first asked to list known methods of contraception in an open-ended question, and then is probed with descriptions of the methods not spontaneously mentioned. The other samples use only yes/no questions describing each contraceptive method. Because not all samples distinguish between spontaneous and probed affirmative responses, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding, with all affirmative responses sharing a first digit of "1," and with the second digit distinguishing between "yes, spontaneously" (code "11") and "yes, probed" (code "12").

In addition, as described below, whether spermicidal agents were included in the description of the diaphragm method changed across DHS phases and varied across surveys. See the Survey Text tab for the exact question wording for samples of interest.

Comparability - Standard DHS

FPKNODIA (V304_04) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for all Phases.
For Phase 1 to 3, the description accompanying the question about diaphragm use generally included the words sponge, suppository, jelly or cream, along with the word diaphragm. For Phase 4 and 5, a diaphragm was generally described as a "as a thin flexible disk" or specifically referred to a diaphragm, and the use of a (spermicidal) suppository, jelly, or cream was asked about in a separate question.

Question structure also changed across all methods in the standard DHS questionnaires. Starting in Phase 4, the response set reduced to two response categories ("yes" and "no"), eliminating the distinction between spontaneous and probed affirmative responses. In Phase 6, only the probing question is provided in the survey form, and the open-ended question is dropped.
