Description

FPLDISMETH5Y (V359) reports the last contraceptive method the woman discontinued use of in the last five years.

When children are chosen as the unit of analysis, the woman respondent indicates the mother of the child.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, response categories for FPLDISMETH5Y (V359) vary across samples. Categories reflect the country-specific availability and awareness of methods (e.g., female condom and lactational amenorrhea), and some samples add certain contraceptives not listed as standard DHS response categories (e.g., herbs or medicinal plants).

Response categories in the standard survey form changed across phases. Beginning in Phase 4, the category "diaphragm/foam/jelly" split into two separate categories: 1) diaphragm and 2) foam or jelly. Some new categories, such as female condoms, were made standard and explicit (rather than subsumed in "other methods") beginning in Phase 4.
