Description

For women who are not currently using a contraceptive method, FPNONMW4 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported a "mission hospital" as a source of family planning. This response category is country-specific to Malawi.

Some samples in the "FPNON" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.

FPNONMW4 is combined with FPNONMW5 (mission health center) and FPNONMW6 (mission mobile clinic) in FPNONPRIVMIS for the Malawi samples. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using FPNONMW4 are encouraged to review FPNONPRIVMIS for a more comprehensive response category.

Comparability

FPNONMW4 has no comparability problems.

Comparability - Standard DHS

An open-ended question about where family planning can be obtained for women not currently using a method is included in Phase IV forward of the standard DHS questionnaire, though FPNONMW4 is a country-specific response.

To increase comparability across samples, IPUMS-DHS created the standard variable FPNONPRIVMIS to integrate samples including mission health facilities as potential sources of family planning. IPUMS-DHS users are encouraged to review the Description tab of FPNONMW4 or the Comparability Tab of FPNONPRIVMIS for more information on the specific categories combined for the Malawi samples.
