Description

FPNOWUSCYCB indicates whether the woman is now using cycle beads (Standard Days Method) to delay or avoid getting pregnant.

Users should be careful to distinguish this variable from FPNOWUSRHY, which refers to the rhythm method (periodic abstinence), another calendar-based contraceptive method.

IPUMS-DHS users may also be interested in FPMETHNOW (V312), which reports the woman's current contraceptive method.

Comparability

Apart from universe differences, FPNOWUSCYCB is largely comparable across samples.

Minor variations in contraceptive labels are present, with the majority of samples labeling this method as "Cycle Beads," "Standard Days Method," or "Standard Days Method (Cycle Beads)." See the Survey Text tab for samples of interest.

Comparability - Standard DHS

A question about the woman's current contraceptive method is included in Phase IV forward of the standard DHS questionnaire, though FPNOWUSCYCB is a country-specific response and is not included in the standard DHS modules.
