Description

FPTALKHUSNO (V611) reports the number of the times the woman has recently discussed family planning with her husband/partner.

Apart from universe differences across samples and phases (see below), FPTALKHUSNO (V611) is largely comparable across samples.

For the majority of samples, the woman was asked to recall family planning discussions over the past 12 months. Some samples refer to different time intervals, and varying intervals could lead to variation in frequency of responses. IPUMS-DHS users should take the reference period into consideration when comparing across samples. Samples that diverge from the standard reference period of one year are discussed below.

Additionally, some surveys ask about the specific number of times family planning was discussed, while other ask more vaguely about how often the woman and her husband/partner discussed family planning. Regardless of this variation in question wording, the woman's response in FPTALKHUSNO (V611) is consistently coded across samples as either (0) never, (1) once or twice, or (2) more often, rather than as an exact number.

Comparability - Standard DHS

FPTALKHUSNO (V611) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phases I-IV. In Phase I surveys, the base universe includes currently married women. Starting in Phase II, this changed to include currently married or in union women who were not sterilized. For Phases III and IV, all currently married or in union women were included. See the Universe tab for samples of interest.

Comparability — Burkina Faso [top]

The 2010 Burkina Faso included FPTALKHUSNO (V611), but as this was a Phase VI survey, the variable was coded as a country-specific variable, and the original universe for this sample diverged significantly from the standard convention. As a result, IPUMS-DHS utilized supplemental programming to modify the data, so only currently married or in union women were included, conforming to the standard universe.

The 2000 Egyptian survey asks if the woman has discussed family planning with her husband/partner in the last six months.

Comparability — Indonesia [top]

The 1994 and 1997 Indonesian surveys included only the responses “Never” and “More often.” IPUMS DHS put the “More often” (than never) into the “Once or twice” category, but this response may be broader in fact in these particular surveys.
