Comparability

Along with universe differences, variations in question wording for FPTVHR (V384B) limit comparability.

For the majority of samples, the woman is asked to recall family planning messages over the last few months. See "Comparability - Standard DHS" below.

The varying time intervals in FPTVHR may lead to a variation in frequency of responses. Researchers interested in using FPTVHR should take the reference period into consideration when comparing across samples.

Only samples with additional comparability issues are addressed below.

Comparability - Standard DHS

FPTVHR (V384B) is included in Phase II forward of the standard DHS questionnaire. In Phase II, the standard questionnaire asks, "In the last month, have you heard a message about family planning on: television?" [emphasis added]. In Phase II, this question is recoded to V384 in the DHS recode. Beginning in Phase 3, the standard DHS questionnaire asks, "In the last few months have you: Heard about family planning on television?"

Comparability — Eswatini (Swaziland) [top]

The 2006 Eswatini/Swaziland survey asks whether the respondent has heard or seen information about family planning on television in the past 6 months.

Comparability — Jordan [top]

The 1997 Jordan questionnaire first asks whether the respondent has heard about family planning on television in the past six months. This is followed by an open-ended question about where the woman receives information about family planning, with "television" listed as a response category. The responses to these two questions are consolidated in FPTVHR to maximize comparability.

The 2002, and 2007 Jordan surveys ask whether the respondent has heard about family planning on television in the past six months. The 2012 Jordan survey asks whether the respondent has heard about family planning on television in the past few months.

Comparability — Namibia [top]

The 2000 Namibia survey asks whether the respondent has heard about condoms on television in the past few months, rather than information on "family planning." The 2006 and 2013 Namibia surveys used the standard wording about family planning.

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

Instead of asking a yes/no question about "television" as a source of family planning information, the 1988 Zimbabwe questionnaire included an open-ended question about all sources of family planning messages. Such a difference in question format may lead to underreporting and change the frequency of affirmative responses for a given medium.
