Description

FPUSPATRN (V361) reports the woman's pattern of contraceptive use by indicating whether she is currently using, has used in the past, or has never used contraception.

Comparability

Along with universe differences, how FPUSPATRN (V361) was coded varies across samples.

Some samples distinguish between only three categories: current use, past use, and nonuse ever of contraception. Other samples distinguish between last past use before and last past use after the most recent birth. In particular, in the model "B" questionnaires, which were generally administered in low contraceptive prevalence countries in DHS Phases 1 through 4, questions pertaining to the woman's contraceptive use since her last birth are not included. As a result, in samples using the model B questionnaire, all past users of contraception are coded as "Used before last birth," although the woman may have used contraception since her last birth.

To account for the differing detail across samples, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding and a 2-digit coding system. The first digit distinguishes the woman's general pattern of contraceptive use: 1) currently using, 2) ever used, but not currently using, and 3) never used.

The second digit provides additional detail. Of particular importance are codes starting with a "2." While a code of "20" indicates in general that the woman used contraception in the past, the second digit retains the original detail of "used since last birth" (code "21") and "used before last birth" (code "22").
