Description

FPUSPLAN (V362) is a constructed variable based on multiple survey questions that reports, for women not currently using contraception, whether the woman intends to use contraception in the future and, if so, when she intends to begin use (in the next 12 months or later). Women uncertain about future contraceptive use are subdivided into those who are unsure about using a method and those unsure about the timing of planned future use.

When children are chosen as the unit of analysis, the woman respondent indicates the mother of the child.

Comparability

In addition to universe differences, FPUSPLAN (V362) has some comparability issues in terms of response categories and question wording.

A few samples, noted below, separated off women who never had sex (code "40"), without further information.

In line with changes in the standard DHS questionnaire (see below), question wording varied across samples. Some surveys probed the woman's contraceptive use and intention in two questions, asking whether she intended to use contraception in the next 12 months or at any time in the future. Other surveys asked only whether the woman intended to use contraception at any future time.

To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding for FPUSPLAN. All responses related to intended future use share a common first digit of "1"; the second digit distinguishes use in the next 12 months (code "11") from use in the more distant future (code "12"). Similarly, responses relating to uncertainty share a first digit of "2," while the second digit distinguishes uncertainty about timing (code "21") from uncertainty about use (code "22").

Comparability - Standard DHS

FPUSPLAN (V362) is included in the standard DHS questionnaire for Phase 1 forward. For Phase 3, women who had never had sex were not asked the question and were given a separate code from the other "not in universe" (NIU) category. For Phase 4 forward, only broad categories about timing of use (later) and intention (unsure about use) are available, and women are no longer asked about their intentions for the next 12 months.

Comparability — Egypt [top]

The 1988 Egypt survey form first asks the woman whether she intends to use a method in the future and then asks her to specify when she plans to begin using the method ("Within the next 12 months"; "Within the next 2-3 years"; "After three years or more"; "Not sure/Don't know"). Though the survey text varies from the standard format, the response categories in FSUSPLAN remain consistent and comparable to other samples.

Comparability — India [top]

The 1992 and 1998 Indian surveys cover only ever-married women. The 2005 Indian survey includes all women of childbearing age but does not collect information on family planning intentions for women who never had sex.

Comparability — Mali [top]

The 1995 Mali survey separates off women who never had sex, but the other surveys from Mali do not.

Comparability — Niger [top]

The 1998 Niger survey separates off women who never had sex, but the rest of the surveys for Niger do not.

Comparability — Zimbabwe [top]

The 1995 Zimbabwe survey separates off women who never had sex, but the rest of the Zimbabwe surveys do not.
